I am an artist who works in lots of different media. I started out as an experimental composer at the Slade School of Fine Art and where I made a lot of bad conceptual art. After graduating I spent more than ten years trying to write a thriller about a dissolute Eighties pop singer, gave that up and took up blogging, street photography and art criticism.
For the last ten years I’ve been making improvisatory paintings, drawings and digital images.
You can see a range of my work on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/richardguest9440/ If there is anything from there you would particularly like to see featured on this website or in the shop, let me know.
One function of the paintings is to explore the tension between representation and the abstract. Several started out as realistic figurative paintings, and were subsequently obliterated by improvised mark making.
The drawings are a combination of improvised abstract and figurative elements in (watercolour and graphite) pencil and (acrylic) paint. They are typically made up of 16 equal sized art board tiles, which when taped together form an A2 sized piece.
Digital Images/ Prints
Parallel to the physical art making I digitally combine photographic images with painted and drawn marks to construct new images.
